James Turrell

This was quite an experience. The high level of manipulation involved to not only decieve the eyes effectively, but to also recreate a new false image in its place is beyond imagination. Turrell successfully allows the viewer to percieve the same space in different ways just by changing the light intensity or colour. Most remarkable is the white room where due to the curved walls, downward sloping base and slowly pulsating coloured light, the enclosed space actually feels endless even though you KNOW the wall is logically about a metre away from you. Another thing is that when you turn to leave, the visible square patch of the wall in the exterior room seems to be painted an orangy-green colour, yet when you fully emerge, the wall is actually white.  Photography inside was not allowed which was a real pity.
